WITS’ Chimene Chetty announced as Global Goodwill Ambassador
Chimene Chetty, Director at WITS Enterprise’s Entrepreneurial Wayz (TEWZ), has been announced as a Global Goodwill Ambassador. This makes her one of six Global Goodwill Ambassadors in South Africa.
The Global Goodwill Ambassadors are an association of humanitarians from around the world. Founded by Richard DiPilla in 2013, the volunteer organisation has designated thousands of Global Goodwill Ambassadors from 150 countries to promote and encourage humanitarian initiatives with the vision to impact positively on societies and make the world a better place. Through fostering friendships and alliances, Global Goodwill Ambassadors also work to inculcate a better understanding of the world’s diverse population and cultures in order to shift negative preconceptions.
Chetty herself has been committed to humanitarian work for over 20 years through her work in the NGO sector. She began focusing on social entrepreneurship when she was the Southern Africa Regional Director of Ashoka, a global NGO, and was later appointed as Director at the Centre for Entrepreneurship at Wits Business School, a position she held for five years.
Chetty views entrepreneurship as a critical lever in delivering on the socio economic rights of South Africans, and for preparing young people for a 21st century global economy. Combined with a strong sense of social justice, her approach seeks to restore equity, access and equal opportunity to marginalised, “othered” and oppressed groups. Through her work at TEWZ, she is intricately involved in the personal development of others, instilling the tools they need achieve self expression and actualization. These, she believes, are critical to personal growth and form the basis for successful entrepreneurship.
This approach to entrepreneurial development is buoyed by years of experience and the invaluable expertise and insights she has garnered as an entrepreneur herself. Chetty has founded various small businesses and initiatives, and has served on several committees, boards, working groups. She is presently on Community of Practice working group of the Department of Higher Education crafting a framework for Entrepreneurial Universities in South Africa
